Food in Italy
Of course, in Italy, food holds an extremely important place. Their specialties are known worldwide, and I have always wanted to taste authentic Italian meals. As someone who loves food and cooking, I was really looking forward to discovering Italian gastronomy from the inside.
We do have pasta, pizza and everything else in France, but it is not the same when it is cooked by Italians. I have to say that I have not been disappointed by what I have tasted. When my boyfriend came here, we went to a restaurant in Urbino, and the cook took time to greet us and explain the menu. At that point, we realized that food is truly a way of sharing for them. They are so happy to see that people highly appreciate their specialties.
Despite all that,I have to admit that my French self has been disappointed by some things. For example, I did not like their pastries. I come from a country where pastries are absolutely delicious, and when I saw that theirs were filled with vanilla or pistachio cream I did not understand.
Moreover, while doing my grocery shopping, I noticed that I missed French snacks a lot. I found that it was very frustrating not to have access to them. Also, I thought that the red meat sold in supermarkets was pretty bad. In my opinion, you have to go to the butcher's to get good meat, but it is much more expensive there.
Overall, Italian cuisine lives up to its reputation, even if I will always miss my French pastries. This experience made me realize how strongly food is tied to culture and identity.
